Northampton International Academy
Case Study: Northampton International Academy
Analytics Energy Review
Environment
Northampton International Academy is a secondary school that occupies an old Post Office Building with a mainly concrete structure. The building had undergone a full retrofit and officially opened in stages between September 2016 and September 2018.
Identification
Whilst the school had recently opened and was expected to operate at its maximum efficiency the site teams knew that the energy usage for the building was too much and with every day demands they were unable to identify where excess energy was being used or wasted. Whilst the BMS system had been recently installed it only provided a window into the system at that exact moment of time.
Solution
AES provided its Analytics platform and deployed it alongside the recently installed central supervisor. This is a platform specifically designed to collect data (BMS in this instance) and deployed rules and algorithms across the data set to identify anomalies and errors.
The system operates 24/7 which allows for errors to be identified often at times when no one is there to see. Working alongside the customer we deployed a number of rules including looking for plant operating outside of normal hours.
Almost instantly we were able to identify a number of overdoor heaters (each 3kw) running outside of operation.
Using the system and site details for costs we were able to identify running costs and in particular out-of-hours running costs. We were able to identify that had this not been captured and changed in line with school operational times it would have cost the Trust £6,000 a year in additional running costs which equates to just over 2 tonnes of CO2.
